"Best Jazz Album of the Year" Danny Green's "With You In Mind"

www.DannyGreen.net

www.PacificCoastJazz.com

San Diego, CA – September 11, 2009 - San Diego-based independent record label, Pacific Coast Jazz (PCJ), is proud to report its artist, Danny Green, won “Best Jazz Album of the Year” from the San Diego Music Foundation in their 19th annual awards ceremony, last night at Viejas Concerts in the Park, San Diego, CA. With You in Mind is Green's debut solo release and it received extensive airplay in stations around the globe beginning in January 2009.

With You In Mind was co-produced with Allan Phillips and features Justin Grinnell (bass), Dylan Savage (drums), Allan Phillips (percussion) and Tripp Sprague (soprano saxophone). With ten original compositions and one cover, Green combines both Brazilian and Latin influences, cradled in mainstream jazz and classical nuances.

“While other PCJ artists have been nominated in the past, this is our first win. We are extremely proud of all of our artists and this demonstrates our ongoing commitment to high quality independent artists,” says Donna Nichols, founder and president of Pacific Coast Jazz. Nichols’ label along with publicist Joy Foster of SV Media Relations and radio promoter Neal Sapper at New World N’Jazz were the team to bring Green’s music to the marketplace in 2009.

Another PCJ artist, Bradley Leighton, was also in the running in the same category for his 2008 release “Soul Collective,” the third Leighton release to receive a nomination from the same organization. “PCJ is thrilled to have this kind of talent on our roster,” said Nichols.

The annual Awards show has raised over $500,000 since its inception in 1991. These funds have been used to assist Handicapped Teen Centers, to fund arts programs within the San Diego Unified School District and to fund the placement of music equipment into schools within San Diego County.

Pacific Coast Jazz, founded in 2003, is a boutique jazz label that also offers artist management services. All PCJ artists are distributed worldwide by MVD Audio/Big Daddy Music. He's got Brazil in mind (among other things)

Jazz pianist Danny Green is exploring 'different harmonies and melodic forms'

2:00 a.m. March 15, 2009

“For me, music is another form of communication,” says jazz pianist Danny Green. (Laura Embry / Union-Tribune) -

Although they won't be married here until June, Emily Kohl has already inspired a unique wedding and pre-wedding present rolled into one from her fiancée, San Diego jazz pianist Danny Green.

Not only did Green write his stirring ballad, “With You in Mind,” for her, he also made it the title track of his impressive debut album, which was jointly released in January by two locally based labels, Alante Recordings and Pacific Coast Jazz.

The song “With You in Mind” will also be performed live as the wedding processional music for Kohl, although Green won't be playing it himself at the ceremony on Coronado.

“I'll kind of be busy standing up there with the rabbi,” said Green, who has asked one of his former UCSD music professors, Kamau Kenyatta, to do the honors for him on piano.

Equally adept at jazz, classical and various Brazilian styles, Green uses his 11-song album to showcase his passion for borders-leaping genres. But even in its most intricate moments, his music never sacrifices soul for technique or substance for flash.

“I used to play a lot more flashy and hurt my hands from doing too much,” said the San Diego native, who graduated from UCSD in 2004, lives in Normal Heights and averages up to five performances a week. “So, when I started geting into Brazilian music, I made it a key point to get away from using flashy tricks and to play with more substance.”

Danny Green "With You In Mind" Debut CD Released January 20

Danny Green Releases Debut CD "With You In Mind"
Just in time for the Obama Inauguration

Danny Green's new debut CD, "With You In Mind" (Pacific Coast Jazz label) is getting quite the attention. His first week of radio airplay put him at #18 on Jazz Week charts and his reviews have been praising this new young talent.

Check out the most recent review on Blogcritics by Kit O'Toole at:

Southern California jazz pianist Danny Green may be just 27, but his musical training began at the tender age of five. Through high school, college, and private instruction, Green became well-versed in jazz, classical, and Latin music genres. Previously he produced and collaborated with the Caballero Verde Quintet on their 2007 release Past Due. Now he puts his extensive experience to good use in his debut solo CD, With You in Mind, a promising outing that should please jazz fans.

Danny GreenPlaying mostly original compositions, Green’s classical training shows in his preciseness, yet the joy of jazz and Latin rhythms still surface. “Jellyfish,” one of the best tracks off the CD, is an appealing samba with Green’s confident, authentic Latin piano merging with intricate percussion. Latin grooves continue with cuts like “Doctor Pasta,” “Baiao Pra Voce,” and “Gigi,” with the latter being a perfect showcase for Green’s speed and dexterity. These tracks encompass his thorough study of Latin music, having worked with several world musicians as well as California’s Brazil Camp program.

He switches gears with the title track, a moody piece reminiscent of Theolonius Monk’s “Round Midnight.” Green’s gorgeous chords create a lush, romantic atmosphere. Again, his classical and jazz backgrounds blend beautifully, lending to his intricate yet soulful playing. “Lullaby for a Poet” shows a delicate side, with Green’s piano alone carrying the beautiful tune. Nowhere is his classical background more evident than on this track.

“Panic Nap” represents yet another sound departure, this time focusing on modern jazz. The beginning cacophony of notes and percussion signal a different tone, with the bass line driving the fast tempo. Green’s keyboard solo suggests fusion a la Miles Davis’s 70s outings. More fusion occurs in “Suite for the Americans” (the only song Green did not compose), an homage to the U.S.’s melting pot of music and culture. Just a hint of the blues can be heard among the exotic rhythms and Green’s precise playing, with fluctuating tempos and motifs thrown in the pleasing mix.

With “Take Five,” Dave Brubeck proved that jazz and classical could coexist. Green continues this combination with With You in Mind, and jazz fans will enjoy his invigorating piano work. This CD marks the beginning of an ambitious artist and is definitely worth a listen.

CD REVIEW: Danny Green, "With You In Mind"

CD Reviews: Danny Green, “With You In Mind”

By: Edward Blanco

Danny Green is a pianist and composer from San Diego who makes an

impressive debut with this first album blending Brazilian and Latin jazz

elements with a taste of mainstream and classical nuances to forge one heck of

a recording. Except for Danilo Perez’s “Suite For The Americas,” a tune

containing strong Latin influences, Green contributes ten varied originals

running the gamut in style from the Brazilian flavor of “Baio Pra Voce” and

“Doctor Pasta,” to the beautiful mainstream title track and the classical finale

“Lullaby for A Poet.”

He attributes his passion for Brazilian music to the time spent at California’s

Brazil Camp and this passion is well played out here where Green lays down

hot tones playing the piano, Fender Rhodes and the Melodica. Also

performing on this album is Justin Grinnell (bass), Dylan Savage (drums),

Tripp Sprague (soprano sax) and Allan Phillips on percussions.

The music starts off with three Brazilian colored tunes but none match the

lively and bouncy meter of “Jellyfish” influenced by the music of Jovino

Santos-Neto. The following piece “Gigi” is a showcase number for Green

where he dominates the melody only to step aside for a tasteful solo from

bassist Grinnell. Green performs on the Melodica on the samba-shaded “Panic

Nap” and shares the spot light with saxophonist Sprague on the last Brazilian

influenced piece on the album, “The Last Minute.”

While the majority of the music falls within the Brazilian/Latin camps, the

best composition on the album has to be the title track written by Green as a

dedication to his girlfriend, now fiancé. “With You In Mind” is a gorgeous soft

love ballad where Green shines on the keys laying down excellent piano lines.

The other tender mainstream jazz number on the disc is the cushy ballad piece

“Off The Streets.”

With You In Mind is more than well worth the spin, it is indeed a brilliant

musical statement from pianist Danny Green, one of the new young lions of

jazz that I’m sure we will be hearing more of in the future. For the present

however, you may want to give this new album a listen, I guarantee you won’t

be disappointed.

San Diego Pianist Danny Green Joins Pacific Coast Jazz

San Diego, CA – October 9, 2008 - San Diego-based independent record label, Pacific Coast Jazz (PCJ), announces the addition of San Diego-based Brazilian jazz pianist, Danny Green, to their roster of distinctive artists. Green’s own independent label, Alante Recordings, will now be an associate label under the Pacific Coast Jazz umbrella.
This affiliation anticipates the release of Green’s first solo release With You In Mind, slated for a street date of January 20, 2009. “The quality of Danny’s work is outstanding and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to high quality independent artists,” says Donna Nichols, founder and president of Pacific Coast Jazz. Nichols’ label has teamed up with publicist Joy Foster of SV Media Relations and radio promoter Neal Sapper at New World N’Jazz and will give Alante Records access to international media buying and retail distribution.

Clearly Danny Green has managed to carve out a place for himself in the lineup of young San Diego jazz artists who have a pulse on keeping the tradition of jazz piano alive while stepping boldly into the future through the use of cultural sounds and world music rhythms. With You In Mind is Danny’s debut solo outing and was co-produced with Allan Phillips and features Justin Grinnell (bass), Dylan Savage (drums), Allan Phillips (percussion) and Tripp Sprague (soprano saxophone). In With You In Mind Danny Green combines both Brazilian and Latin influences and cradles them in mainstream jazz and classical nuances. As a result of Danny’s musical influences his sound comes across to listeners as a pianistic mixture of Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau, Danilo Perez, and Ravel with original compositions emerging from the sincerity of his soul. “A beautiful addition to our artist roster,” added Nichols.

Pacific Coast Jazz, founded in 2003, is a boutique jazz label that also offers artist management services. All PCJ artists are distributed worldwide by MVD Audio/Big Daddy Music.
